American humans have an amazing ability to adapt to a new normal. We see some type of tragedy and are shocked, appalled and moved. As time goes by, we feel less strongly. When the tragedy is repeated over...and over... we become less moved with each instance. Eventually, tragedy + time + recurrence = apathy; and just becomes the new normal. That is the biggest tragedy. Social conditioning is nothing new. It is like your first day at a nude resort...then by the third day you don't notice people are naked. Living in FL, you probably don't look up to see a rocket, but the first time you drove to Brevard to be closer. This is how tragic circumstances stop being tragic, and become normal...then acceptable...
